The lines served by the Green train and its itineraries that give the possibility of seeing uncontaminated nature and places where time seems to have stood still.
Arbatax - Mandas
Departs from the town of Tortolì towards the discovery of a part of Sardinia uncontaminated and immersed in a deep, almost surreal silence. Once the plains of vineyards and olive groves are left behind, the train arrives at "Sella Elecci" which allows the people of Arzana and Villagrande to travel to and from work in the fields and olive groves. Once more departed, the train passes through firstly the town of Ilbono and then through that of Lanusei. Following these, the train winds its way through the pretty hills above the towns. Once over the bridge with a height of 60m, the train passes through the village of Arzana to arrive at the isolated, windy station of Arzana 4km from the village. After a short time you can admire the north face of Mount Idolo and the peak of Mount Gennargentu in the distance. Crossing the territory of Villagrande you arrive at its so-named station, 8km from the village.
This territory is characterised by the presence of dense ilex and millenary oak forests, Mediterranean bush glades, growths of perfumed thyme, clear, fresh-water streams and pasture.
After passing through the stations of Arzana and Villagrande the journey continues, crossing the valley of Baccu Nieddu and entering the new village that is the land of Gairo and towards the station of Gairo Scalo (or Gairo Nuovo) where, during the 50's, families lived until forced to move away by a terrific landslide. After the station of Gairo Scalo the train arrives at Taccuisara and then heads west towards Ussassai.
On leaving the station of Ussassai, the train passes through the canyon of Taccuisara, crossing the beautiful stone and iron bridge over 60m long, and you find yourselves in front of the heights of Is Taccus and the slopes of Gennargentu and Grigline di Desulo, which give the impression of columns of dolomites with their sides covered in rich vegetation.
Proceeding with good vigour, the train crosses the plains to arrive at the park of Montarbu. The panorama is splendid and fascinating in the heart of the red magnesium chalkstone of the bulwarks of Su Tonneri. After this bewitching environment of Montarbu and the heights of Perdaliana, the journey proceeds towards Seui where the rocky peaks of Su Tonneri and the diabolic mountains of Arcueri languish. At Seui the train passes through the centre, so close to the houses that you can even study their interiors, and heads for Sadali then on towards first Esterzili then Villanovatulo.
At this point of the journey the train passes over various heights; the landscape seen through the windows is simply breathtaking, maybe among the wildest on the whole island, with rich and varied vegetation so spontaneous that it seems to escape through the walls of stone of rare beauty.
Once past the station of Villanovatulo the journey continues into new territory, Sarcidano crossed by the Flumendosa river, with the stations of Nurri and Orroli, villages with a long tradition of cattle rearing, in fact today there are over 20,000 livestock. After Sarcidano, the train completes the final leg of the journey crossing the characteristic bridge of Rio Mulargia with the surrounding the ancient grey marble caves before finally arriving at its destination of Mandas.
