The territory of Ogliastra that extends from Tertenia in the south to Dorgali in the north makes up the east-central part of the island and could be defined as the natural habitat for
vineyards not only for the type of soil but also for the favourable winds and amount of sunshine. The area cultivated for winemaking is around 4000 acres, or around 9% of S.A.U. Following the SS125 road around 95/100km you can see the vineyards of Tertenia and Jerzu whose grape harvests are taken to the Cantina Sociale in Jerzu, and continuing along the road for a further 10km you find the vineyards of Cardedu.
Vineyards can be found in almost all the territory of Ogliastra but their production rate is less than that of the previously mentioned areas and their wines are generally for consumption in their place of origin rather than the selling of the grapes to other areas. The most commonly cultivated grape of this territory is the Cannonau red, originally imported by the Spanish and the Aragons and the tradition is one of quality rather than quantity realised with the capable hands of the winemakers.
