Short Vocabulary

Here, we present you with a little Sardinian vocabulary, in case you wish to spend some time visiting our island. Above all in the hinterlands, the Sardinian language is very much alive and linked to its origins. It is good to know that there are various local dialects, and even that two locals from different zones can speak in Sardinian and not understand one another! Towards the central areas, the pronunciation is harder and more guttural with the presence of "z" and "g" in many words.
Along the coast, however, more easily colonised, the language is becoming lost, although certain zones such as Alghero, Carloforte and Calasetta are real linguistic isles in their own right. The dialect spoken in Alghero has inflections of Catalan, while the other two have inflections of Genovese. Today, Sardinian has become a kind of regional Italian; thoughts translated directly from Sardinian into Italian, therefore some phrases have strange constructions; for example "Andato sei?", "Gone you are?", which translates incorrectly but derives from Latin and Sardinian.
