For the dialects as well, modern Italian has overtaken as the more commonly used language. The dialects are spoken in specific areas of the island and are even today in their original forms. Linguists prefer to divide these dialects into three principal groups; central or logudorese, northern or gallurese, and southern or campidanese.

In Sardinia there are 4 new provinces with the regional law n. 9 del 12 .07.2001: Carbonia-Iglesias, Medio Campidano, Ogliastra, Olbia-Tempio.
