Plants

Sardinia, because of its isolated geographic position and its geological history, has a very particular plant life which ranges from more recent to almost prehistoric species. In fact, on the island there are many endemisms, Flora Sardegnathat is plants native to Sardinia that only thrive in certain areas(areali). These areas in general are, sandy dunes, rocky peaks or isolated valleys. We can also find numerous paleo-endemisms, or endemic species of prehistoric origin. The plant life is typically Mediterranean.
Ogliastra, composed of numerous impervious and isolated regions and, therefore, a wealth of natural elements, is a continuity of the neighbouring Supramonte. As such, the area makes up part of the proposed National Park of Gennargentu. On the rocky coastline we can find an intense growth of wild fennel (foenicolum selvaticum), Phoenician juniper (juniperus) and other endemisms such as the aromatic elicriso (helichrysum italicum) and the limonium Tyrrhenicum, the wild olive tree, the lentisk and the tamarisk. In the glades and plains we can find euphorbia, myrtle, rosemary, sage, asphodel, broom, heather and some rare examples of dwarf palms.
In the dry areas devastated by fire the asphodel prevails, the rock-rose and the euphorbia. The forests are Peonia Sardegnacharacterised by trees of high trunks such as the carob, the holm-oak, the oak, the wild olive tree (from which it is thought gives rise to the name of the region of Ogliastra).

In the underbrush we can find predominantly the arbutus, the rock-rose, myrtle, lentisk, fern, liana plants, rare species of orchid and few examples of the noted mascula peony and the digitalis purpurea.
The river banks are rich with alders, tamarisks, willows, and various bulbous plants.
Along with the above mentioned endemisms and rarities, you can find secular examples of yew, the wild olive trees of Santa Maria Navarrese, holm-oak and juniper forests (Cala Goloritzè).
In this territory you can find a rich marine vegetation, dominated predominately by wide-spread fields of Posidonia Oceanica
