Baunei

It is a small tourist centre located in the eastern centre of Sardinia. It is without doubt one of the best places in the island, that offers a breathtaking view. A terrace in front of the sea and the mountain in which you can eat and touch glasses with friends. If you are looking for a holiday in Sardinia in which you can discover typical archeology, anthropology and nature of the area, Baunei turns to be the best choice.
The town offers crystal waters and a mountain landscape at the same time. Moreover, you have the opportunity to be guided by experts, who live the mountain every day, and who will take you through unique and fascinating tracks that lead to beautiful coves as the ones of “Goloritzé" and "Sisine", that can be reached by earth exclusively from the Supramonte of Baunei.

Different solutions to stay comfortable in these lovely places: holiday homes and apartments designed for your needs.

The territory spreads out for 220 km circa and is ploughed by deep valleys crossed by little water streams called ”codule”, that flow into the sea for over 40 km along the cost. Inside the gulf there are the famous coves of “Luna”, “Mariolu”, “Goloritzé”, “Biriala” and “Sisine” which interrupt the ramparts and the calcareous falaise and turn the coast in one of the most beautiful of Italy and probably of the entire world. Behind the town there is the upland of the “Golgo”, where Saint Pietro’s country church (XVII century), the abyss of “Su sterru” (one of the deepest in Europe), the nuraghi and “Piscinas”(natural basins used to contain rainwater), are surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation. Specialized guides escort every year hundreds of tourists attracted by wild landscapes and by settlements that date back to the Nuraghi Age. Along the street that links up Baunei to Santa Maria Navarrese you will find the access to another wonder of “Pedra Longa”. The monolith, also named “Agugliastra”, is approximately 128m high and is an integral part of Baunei’s calcareous planking that covers a wide territory that goes northward, from Santa Maria Navarrese to Cala Luna. Near “Pedra Longa” and “Punta Giradili” there are some of the most beautiful mountain faces to be climbed in Europe. The town offers a great number of cultural events and religious recurrences as well. Processions in traditional costumes and masses held in the parish church of Saint Nicola, patron Saint of the town, or in the country Churches of Saint Lussorio and Saint Lucia, Saint Pietro and Saint Mary.

The opening of Baunei’s historical houses is a very popular event that can’t be missed. During this occurrence, called “Cortes Apertas”, people of the place, present their traditional “art” and “flavors”. This occasion gives you the opportunity to go for a walk along the town old streets and admire Baunei’s typical costumes; taste typical dishes offered in each house and see ancient jobs related to everyday life. You will see for example how the milling of wheat was done; how the typical potato bread called “Turredda” was prepared; the shoeing of horses; how to prepare Shepherds’ typical bread (Su Pistoccu) and “Culurgiones”(a first dish with a unique taste), and Baunei’s typical sweet, called “su Cunfettu”, which was prepared in the past as today for weddings. Jobs and recipes are demonstrated along the old streets, as well as Sardinia’s typical knife handicraft (S’arrasoa) and the “ox car” assemblage.
