The cave was first explored and surveyed in the 1950s by the speleological group PIO XI. So far 800 m of tunnels have been mapped, while others are still being explored. The cavity is also important from a faunistic point of view, because it was there that Padre Forreddu, one of the founders of Sardinian speleology, studied the monk seal, living day and night in close contact with the mammal.
