Canyoning

Canyoning is not an extreme sport, and can be enjoyed by all. There are many routes and the grade of difficulty is chosen according to the group. The descents, on foot, follow streams that run through rocky canyons, and once begun, it is not possible to turn back; this is a characteristic of canyoning. In some descents, it is necessary to use climbing equipment, which is subsequently gathered in order to continue the descent, thus it isn't possible to turn back.

Sardinia is one of the regions of Italy where this sport is carried out, along with other excursions. There are different areas that offer these opportunities, among coastal and mountainous areas, from the oriental coast to the Supramonte mountains. In particular is the Gola di Gorropu, reached via Urzulei and Dorgali, well-known as the deepest canyon in Europe. Remember that the streams and rivers of Sardinia are not numerous and do not bring a large quantity of water. The ideal period is spring, when the water of the streams and rivers begins to evaporate.

Where to go:
1. "Codula di Fuili", duration: 3-4hrs (near Dorgali, Cala Gonone)
Difficulty: easy (1st level) A route accessible also for those who are using climbing equipment for the first time. An easy descent into the Codula di Fuili for around 20mins and then crossing the first gorge of about 8m. Further on, the canyon becomes particularly narrow and, after a few corners, there are other gorges to cross (20m and 13m). Now, the route takes you through a thick undergrowth of oleander which reaches down to the splendid bay of Fuili.

2. "Codula Orbisi-Pischina Urthaddala", duration 3hrs. Difficulty: medium (2nd level)
An itinerary that allows access to the heart of the Supramonte, with its beautiful landscape, with the possibility, along the route, to admire the many archaeological sites and speleological routes into the Grotte di Orbisi caves. Inside the Pischina Urthaddala, an enormous pothole, you can admire a rare endemism of Sardinia; the triton.
